Michele Bamburak Artists Statement And Biography

Tolstoy: “To evoke in oneself a feeling one has once experienced and, having evoked it in oneself then by means of movements, lines, colors, sounds, or forms expressed in words, so to transmit that feeling that others experience the same feeling – this is the activity of art. Art is a human activity consisting in this, that one man consciously, by means of certain external signs, hands on to others feelings he or she has lived through, and that others are infected by these feelings and also experience them...”

My need to create is primarily based on connections. Connections with others in a manner that touches them emotionally and spiritually. Tolstoy best exemplifies my purpose in creating. I try to use the emotions and experiences in my own life to bring out similar feelings in others. I search for ways to cause contemplation in the viewer, and to form relationships with their emotions and mine. To me, this is the essence of my endeavors, the human factors of both isolation and intimacy with our fellow man, these play a crucial part in the message developed in my work. The title of the piece, “Humble Gratitude”, conveys both a literal and subliminal message. The spaces of a calligraphy piece give us pause to contemplate the beauty of the letterform, and the spaces either shared or implied of the letters, bodies or forms that interact with each other in my work give us time to contemplate the relationships of those forms to one another in reality and in our imaginations.
