PITTSBURGH QUARTERLY MAGAZINE Collaborating with Jennifer McNulty for the Quarterly’s summer issue, I suggested a uniquely Pittsburgh moment. Occurring only once in the history of PNC Park in a regular season game, a “Splashdown” is when a home run goes into the Allegheny River on a fly ball. It was an opportunity to showcase the skyline from a rarely seen dramatic point of view. The week the magazine was released, Pirate first baseman Garrett Jones hit a towering 468-foot home run into the river under the Clemente Bridge. Timing is everything.
